The members of this family are herbaceous plants with opposite or spirally arranged leaves and spike-like inflorescences of small, bilaterally symmetrical flowers. The petals and sepals are usually six in number, occasionally four or eight. The pollen-bearing stamens are usually very numerous (up to forty) and the ovaries develop within simple capsule fruits.
