Wayside, verge, perimeter, fringe, periphery - these words all describe the edges of habitats, woodlands, fields, marshes, lakes, pathways, roads etc. where belts of flowering plants can thrive in the special micro habitats available there. These plants may struggle in the 'parent habitat' (lack of light in the woodland, soil disturbance in the fields) but thrive on the edges forming hedgerows , festoons of climbers and colourful fringes of wayside flowers that also provide a welcome retreat for insects and other small animals.
